Diviso in due movimenti, "Solo" racconta la vita e i sogni di Ulrich, un chimico bulgaro nato nella prima decade del Ventesimo secolo. Nel primo movimento Ulrich, ormai cieco e vecchissimo, chiuso in un anonimo appartamento di Sofia, si abbandona ai ricordi e rievoca la sua vita. Figlio di un ingegnere ferroviario, poco più che bambino, Ulrich ha due grandi passioni: il violino e la chimica. Negatagli la prima dal padre, parte per la Berlino di Einstein e Fritz Haber per approfondire la seconda. Ma i suoi studi sono interrotti quando la fortuna di famiglia si estingue e deve tornare a Sofia per aiutare i genitori. Non lascerà più la Bulgaria. Le ambizioni che gli rimangono sono seppellite prima dall'avvento del comunismo e poi da quello del capitalismo selvaggio. Una vita fallimentare. Ma avvicinandosi alla fine, Ulrich si rende conto di come le frustrazioni della sua esistenza siano state un terreno fertile per la creazione di una vita sognata. E sono questi sogni che compongono la volatile seconda parte del libro. Nel secondo movimento, in un rapido balzo dal passato al presente, da vite vissute a vite fantasticate, Dasgupta segue i figli immaginari di Ulrich, che, pur nati nel comunismo, si fanno strada in un mondo post comunista fatto di celebrità e violenza. Personaggi e moventi s'intrecciano con il ritmo del sogno dietro alle palpebre dell'anziano narratore che vede i suoi figli sognati, variazioni sul tema della sua vita, tentare di vivere come a lui non è riuscito.
