Synopsis
Book by Alderson, Lawrence
From Library Journal
This pictorial sampler of rare and endangered livestock and poultry covers pigs, cattle, sheep, goats, horses, and chickens. About 70 different breeds are displayed in well over 100 photographs, with an emphasis on breeds originating in Great Britain and Europe. Many of the breeds shown will be unfamiliar to Americans, who will nevertheless recognize Berkshire hogs, Highland cattle, Clydesdale horses, and Langshan poultry, among other breeds featured. The text, by a recognized authority on the conservation of rare livestock breeds and founder and chair of Rare Breeds International, consists of a seven-page overview, plus lengthy captions to British animal photographer Dowling's many attractive color photographs. There is now a recognized need to save old and rare domestic breeds for the same reason we need to save wild animal species-to preserve genetic diversity. Recommended especially for public libraries but appropriate for any library collecting in this area.
