Chapter One

Ralphie Rat was a big ole bully! All the little rats of Ratsville were afraid of him.

Before or after school, Ralphie always beat someone up. He even picked on poor, ole Ronnie Rat.

Ronnie Rat was the littlest kid rat in Ratsville Elementary School.

When school let out for summer, Ralphie was always bored and never had anything to do.

None of the other kid rats would play with Ralphie. He was too big, too mean, and oh, so scary!

But Ralphie was actually very lonely and badly wanted friends. He just didn't know how to go about making friends. Poor, ole Ralphie Rat!

Two days before school was to begin, Ralphie was walking home from the creek when he heard laughter, giggles of glee, and rat squeals of joy.

The happy sounds were coming from Farmer Frank's big, leaning, red barn.

Ralphie sneaked as close to the barn as possible. He looked through a big hole in the west wall.

Jumping jellybeans and hog slop puddin'! Ralphie saw all the Ratsville kid rats having a ball ... and he wasn't invited!!

Ralphie got mad!

There was Ronnie Rat and his twin sister, Sadie Rat, Zack Rat, Lainie Rat, Ricky Rat, Zaela Rat, Allie Rat, Billy Rat, and the whole gang from Ratsville Elementary School!

Everyone but Ralphie Rat ... the big, ole, lonely bully who was on the outside looking in. "Gee," Ralphie said to himself, "They sure are having some great summer fun."

Ralphie jumped through the hole in the west wall.

Lainie Rat saw him and squealed, "Run! Run! It's that mean, ole bully, Ralphie Rat! Head for the forts and hide!"

As each kid rat scurried to hide, Ralphie chased little Ronnie Rat and his twin sister, Sadie Rat, into a small rat hole.
