Then an unverified pill reaches a critically ill teenager. Its packaging resembles medicine missing from a Midway clinic transfer, and the trail runs through Stonegate's informal barter market. Suspicion settles on a prepared household that refuses inspection, turning one medical emergency into a test of property, evidence, and public anger.

Daniel authorizes limited searches, convinced that written procedure can restrain fear. Instead, each search makes accusation more valuable and privacy more suspicious. The evidence begins pointing toward a secret inside his own family. Exposing it could preserve the equal rules he publicly defends. Concealing it could protect someone he loves while innocent newcomers absorb the blame.
