Ratios in the Republic - Voter Choice Patterns in the World?s Largest Democracy

Why do millions of people, voting freely and in secret, repeatedly produce recognizable electoral patterns? This book explores that question through the history of India's General Elections from 1951–52 to 2024. Drawing on behavioural genetics, population ecology, and political analysis, it examines whether large-scale voting outcomes may reflect underlying regularities in human behaviour. The book does not argue that genes determine how people vote. Instead, it suggests that voters bring different predispositions to the political process, and that these interact with changing social, economic, and political conditions. When millions of such individual decisions are combined, broader and often recurring electoral patterns can emerge. India, with its vast and diverse electorate, provides a unique setting for studying these patterns. Looking at elections from a population-based and interdisciplinary perspective, the book moves beyond parties, leaders, and campaign events to explore deeper forces shaping democratic choice. It invites readers to see elections not only as contests for political power, but also as reflections of enduring patterns in human behaviour.
