Ravenna, Ohio Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps 1884?1922 / Color Facsimile

Between 1884 and 1922 the Sanborn Map Company of New York surveyed Ravenna, Ohio seven times, and this volume reprints every sheet of all seven editions ? 1884, 1889, 1893, 1898, 1904, 1911, and 1922 ? complete and in full color, reproduced from the originals preserved in the Geography and Map Division of the Library of Congress. Sanborn fire insurance maps drew every building in town to its footprint, color-coded by construction ? yellow for frame, pink for brick, blue for stone ? with notes on roofs, water mains, hydrants, and fire apparatus. The 1884 survey catches the Portage County seat as a glassmaking and milling town of 4,600: the Diamond, Enterprise, and Crown Flint glass works, the Atlantic Mills, Haley Brothers' foundry, and the Quaker Mill Company's oat meal mill on the railroad sidings ? the mill that gave America the Quaker brand. Across seven surveys the reader can watch Ravenna grow to the county seat of 7,250 mapped in 1922, with its courthouse and jail, City Hall, opera house, the Riddle hearse and coach works, the Cleveland Worsted Mills, Oak Rubber's toy-balloon factory, and the A.C. Williams hardware and toy foundry. Later editions include street indexes naming every business, church, school, and factory, so any lot in town can be traced across four decades. An essential reference for genealogists, house historians, and collectors of Ohio history. 78 pages. 8.5" x 11". Full color. Paperback. Satisfaction guaranteed or you can send it back. …
