He laughed. He cried. He worried. He felt betrayed. He was like you and me in every way but one — He was sinless.

We were taught that Jesus is fully God and fully Man. Most of us stopped at the first half.

But He was not Superman from our comic books. Untouchable. Unreachable. Indestructible. He could have sinned. He didn't. Not once.

The church has tipped that scale for so long that the Man Jesus has nearly disappeared. We know the Christ who calmed the storm. We are far less acquainted with the Man who slept through it — exhausted.

If Jesus was a superman, we are off the hook entirely. Why strive after an obedience we could never manage? But if He was a Man who chose obedience — the same choice set before Adam, and before us — then His life is not a spectacle to admire. It is a pattern that can be followed as Jesus lived it. Dependent on the indwelling Holy Spirit.
