From Booklist
Books in the We Both Read nonfiction series present topics of interest to children in a format designed for sharing with a more experienced reader, such as a parent or tutor. A double-page spread typically includes at least two illustrations, usually clear, colorful photos. Below them is white space for text, with several sentences on the left-hand page for the adult to read and, on the right, a shorter text that carries the idea forward using somewhat simpler words, a larger font, and wider line-spacing. One nice feature of the dual text is that difficult words are introduced on the left-hand pages, where they show up in bold type. Children first introduced to them by the adult will find it easier to recognize and read them in the text on the facing page, where they appear in bold again. After looking at soccerlike games in ancient Asia, Europe, and North America, Soccer! introduces basic elements of the sport, famous players Pelé and Mia Hamm, and the importance of attitude, practice, good food, and sportsmanship. An appealing series for many young readers. Grades 1-3. --Carolyn Phelan
