Reading French in the Arts and Sciences

The Fourth Edition of "Reading French in the Arts and Sciences offers a systematic approach to comprehending and translating texts in the humanities and technical disciplines, focusing on the grammar needed for this task. It begins with short passages on familiar themes and gradually increases the difficulty level to more technical and literary topics. The purpose of Reading French in the Arts and Sciences, 4th Edition, is to provide students with an effective way to learn to read and translate French. The method assumes no previous knowledge of French or grammatical terminology, and since the text aims to teach reading, no exercises in composition or conversation are included. The success of Reading French in the Arts and Sciences over the three previous editions lies in its straightforward, pragmatic approach to the teaching of reading skills. Proficiency in understanding a foreign language, like any other skills, is attained by persistent application of a systematic method. Such a method is described in the Introduction to this book and is applied in the succeeding chapters. Learning time is shortened through the introduction of special strategies governing verb tenses and word-order problems and through the omission of discussion of and practice in matters important only for composition or conversation.
