About this title

Synopsis

Fluency, comprehension and viewing, taught in twenty-one stages that follow the phonics sequence, so students read text built from what they have already been taught.Reading and Viewing is a structured literacy teaching resource for primary teaching, tutoring and reading intervention. Each stage combines decodable fluency practice, explicit comprehension instruction, vocabulary, viewing and a Progress Gate that decides one thing: is this reader ready to move on?Every stage follows the same layout, so any teacher can pick it up and run it. A one-page lesson sequence, word banks, sound strips, heart words, dictation, twenty fluency sentences, a WWWWW comprehension check and an accuracy tracker appear in the same order at every stage. Instructions are short and plain, written for busy classroom teachers and pre-service teachers alike.Reading fluency is accuracy and phrasing, not speed. There is no words-per-minute target. Students read each set Cold, Warm and Hot, and move on at 90% accuracy with a Fluency Quality score of 3 or 4.Reading starts with looking. The viewing strand moves from faces and body language to photographs, comics, maps, film and multimodal texts, with prompts for every stage. For teachers: ready to run without preparation. For parents: take-home sentences use only the patterns and heart words already taught. For tutors: stage-matched texts target the exact point where a reader is stalling. For schools: one shared sequence and teaching language across classrooms. Also includes Freeze Points for shared reading, reciprocal teaching, a placement snapshot, the Extended Text Cycle for whole novels, the Reading Identity Strand, guidance on reading anxiety and home partnership, a master glossary and teacher reference appendices. Suitable for whole-class teaching, small-group guided reading, and reading intervention for students with dyslexia and for EAL/D learners.Aligned to the Australian Curriculum v9 and built on the science of reading. Companion volumes for Foundation-Year 1, Year 2, Years 3-4, Years 5-6 and Years 7-8 extend it with cross-curricular decodable texts for Mathematics, Science and HaSS.Part of the Skeleton Compendium series by Jodie Adamantine.
