Reading & Writing in the Arts: A Handbook, Revised Ed.

Here is a practical guide to the literature on art and art history, designed for students and for the layman seeking information on any aspect of the visual arts, including painting, sculpture, crafts, antiques, graphics, and architecture. It contains a comprehensive key to a wide range of reference sources, including books and series, periodicals,

museum and exhibition catalogs, films, and photographs of works of art. In addition to the specific areas of art history, this book also lists sources for questions about technical matters such as detecting forgeries, shipping works of art, cleaning paintings, and cataloging.

The volume offers suggestions to students for research and writing papers in art history, covering the selection of topics, the location and evaluation of source materials, the documentation form for works of art, and techniques of museum research. A section is included on the preparation of research for publication.

Bernard Goldman is professor of art and art history at Wayne State University.
