Ten-year-old Marcus plans to become a professional basketball player, but when he, his twin sister, and their classmates meet a real star on a school field trip, they learn the importance of dreaming more than one career dream.
Growing increasingly disheartened with watching so many boys (and a growing number of girls) put all of their hopes and dreams into becoming superstar athletes, Richardson began writing The Real Slam Dunk. It is the debut book in the I Can Be Anything I Want to Be Series. She created the story idea with the intent of using sports to capture the reading interest of children and as a vehicle to expose children to a world of other career possibilities. The mission of her books is simple -- to turn kids' hoop dreams into realistic, achievable ones.
Richardson was recently invited to join the National Basketball Association’s Read to Achieve National All-Star Reading team where she will be working with the NBA and WNBA in their efforts to promote reading.
Richardson’s book is currently used in reading and career exploration programs in numerous elementary and middle schools. The author visits schools and youth organizations to conduct readings, inspirational chats and writing workshops based on the book.
