The Real World of War

After an idyllic boyhood in Minnesota, Dick Wiessner finds himself plunged into an unexpected and conflictual career at the outbreak of WWII. He must learn how to reconcile his German immigrant background with bombing and strafing their very fields, farms, rail lines and airports. Yet his eighty missions on the western front as a P-47 pilot, 86th Fighter Bomber Group, 526th Squadron, earn him a distinguished and decorated record. Vividly told in his own words, this fast moving story of death defying combat offers the graphically illustrated account of what war was really like and how- for many- it changed lives.
