RealTime Physics: Active Learning Laboratories Mechanics, Module 1

This computer-based lab manual contains experiments in mechanics, thermodynamics, E&M, and optics using hardware and software designed to enhance readers' understanding of calculus-based physics concepts. It uses an active learning cycle, including concept overviews, hypothesis-testing, prediction-making, and investigations.

A Powerful New Way to Learn Physics! RealTime Physics is intended for use in a lab equipped with MBL (micro-computer-based lab) tools (electronic sensors, microcomputer interface, and software for data collection and analysis). It provides a powerful way to enhance conceptual learning while developing quantitative skills. With RealTime Physics the traditional amount of time allotted to labs remains the same, but your students work in a more active, computer-based learning environment. RealTime Physics:

• Offers experiments in mechanics and thermodynamics (electric circuits and optics will appear in subsequent publications).
• Provides activities that invite you to construct physical models based on observations from real experiments.
• Uses a learning cycle of prediction, observation, and comparison based on physics education research.
• Includes pre-lab preparation sheets and homework designed to reinforce critical concepts and skills.
• Is compatible with most MBL hardware and software.
