Reasoning and Applied Mathematics for the Early Years

Is it possible that the desire to learn mathematics is being destroyed for most students because of conditioning based on rote learning with the focus on pure mathematics and geometry through computer-driven instruction? Author Robert L. Hammond believes this to be the case and discusses solutions to this problem in Reasoning and Applied Mathematics for the Early Years: A Handbook for Teachers.Hammond provides lessons on how we can learn to love mathematics by approaching it as a "free creation of thought" as he:Examines the current math programs for reasoning for seventh- and eighth-grade students, and indicates the need for focusing on reasoning as a major part of math instructionReviews the results of his research to develop arithmetic and mathematical situations for the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and divisionReviews the laws governing the four basic operations that give the foundation for the lessons used in the workbookReasoning and Applied Mathematics for the Early Years also includes a student workbook as a resource for methods to teach reasoning and skill development to students. Using the guidelines provided, teachers can help their students develop skills in critical reading, thinking, and writing, while honing their reasoning and applied mathematics proficiencies.

As an educational evaluator and researcher, Robert L. Hammond has been employed by universities and school districts to set up evaluation and test development centers for improving instruction. He resides in the Willamette Valley of Oregon with his wife, Bette.
