Public education adheres to a rote-based, assembly-line model that worked well back in the heyday of American manufacturing. Those days are gone. Our school system prepares students for a workplace that no longer exists.
Educational consultant David W. Hale, PE, argues that a radical transformation of public education would arm students with the skills and mind-sets they need to succeed in the intensely competitive modern global workforce. His no-nonsense system focuses on five Rs: reality check, reeducate, refinance, refocus, and revolutionize.
Hale’s approach requires us to accept the reality that US education now faces global competition. From there, we need reeducated teachers to provide solutions to poverty, drugs, and other external problems that hinder learning.
Refinancing public education is vital if we are to develop a cost-effective, student-focused education system. We need to refocus how we define educational success to prepare high school graduates for the modern workforce. And, finally, we must revolutionize teaching and learning techniques to maximize student success.
Bold, straightforward, and timely, Rebuilding Our Public Educational System: Using the Five R Approach offers a transformative model for an educational system currently incapable of handling global competition.
