Recent Events at Mauritius

Recent Events At Mauritius by John Jeremie. This is a detailed historical narrative documenting the political and social upheavals in the colony of Mauritius around the early 1830s, including the prelude to the 1832 slave amelioration measures, the rise of colonial committees, and the confrontation between the colony’s insurgent authorities and the British government. The work covers the governance, legal reforms, and trials that followed, notably the Grand Port trials, the appointment of Jeremie as procureur-general, and the subsequent measures to restore order. It also situates Mauritius in the broader context of British imperial policy, emancipation, and the tension between colonial administration and local factions. Through documents, correspondence, and narrative, Jeremie presents a thorough account of how authority, law, and loyalty were contested on the island, and how, after a period of upheaval, attempts were made to reestablish governance under the crown. This edition reprints the original 1835 publication with editorial notes.
