Synopsis
Retired FBI agent, Luke Chamberlin, is hiking the Pacific Crest Trail to free himself from feelings of doubt about his past career, his shaky marriage, and the person he's become. Part way up the trail, an urgent message from a stranger indicates that trouble lies ahead near the border with Canada. Setting aside his unwillingness to get involved, Luke puts together a renegade team of law enforcement officers to check out the northern border--armed with firepower, determination, and a tomahawk. At Harts Pass, high in the Cascades, the team finds more than they bargained for at a charred campsite. They organize a plan to stop a group of would-terrorists aiming to wreak havoc on the West Coast. But not before Luke puts the operation, and everything he stands for, in jeopardy. Set in the magnificent wilderness of the Pacific mountains, Reckoning At Harts Pass is a riveting tale of courage, revelation, and redemption.
From the Back Cover
"Inspired in part by a real Cold War confrontation of 1986, Reckoning At Harts Pass presents a vivid tale of terrorists plotting to import nuclear material into the United States for a dirty bomb. It's clear that Elizabeth Macalaster had access to inside information, revealing bureaucratic incompetence, identity deception, and the porous U.S.-Canadian border. The author guides the reader to a surprising finale involving a retired U.S. spook, his Russian nemesis now turned helper, and a tomahawk. An engaging, easy read."
Nicholas Daniloff,
author of Of Spies and Spokesmen, and Two Lives; One Russia
"An exciting story with all of the details you would expect from someone who had done her homework and has an inside knowledge of how the system really works. The characters are realistic and genuine, the settings beautiful and unusual. Look out Mr. Hunter, there's a new hero in town--and he doesn't need a gun."
John Baldwin,
Special Agent, FBI, retired, and author of forthcoming Unlikely Heroes
"A distance hike turns out to involve the world it typically escapes--and a whole lot more. Reckoning At Harts Pass is an engaging tale of international terrorism played out against the backdrop of a hiker's trip in the isolated wilderness of the Pacific Crest Trail."
Scott Williamson,
PCT record-holder for distance and speed
