Stickers, trophies, prizes, points, tokens, grades all are forms of rewards that teachers use every day. But do such premiums work? The authors deliver a thoughtful and well-researched answer: No, they do not work; rewards actually interfere with learning. What students need, say the authors, is thoughtful, specific recognition. This book explores the difference between rewards and recognition. It provides practical ideas that will build students confidence, motivate them, and help them develop skills for lifelong learning. This book includes: practical ideas for recognition in the classroom and at school criteria-based assessment ideas responses to commonly asked questions an overview of research and comprehensive bibliographies
