About this title

Synopsis

Recollections Of General Garibaldi ; Or Travels From Rome To Lucerne: Comprising A Visit To The Mediterranean Isles Of La Maddalena And Caprera, And General Garibaldi's Home" by Giuseppe Garibaldi. In this 19th-century travel memoir, the narrative documents Garibaldi's horseback odyssey from Rome to Lucerne, with extensive stops including Loreto, the Romagna, and the Marche, and a later section describing his exile on La Maddalena and Caprera. The work blends vivid landscape descriptions with historical commentary and personal anecdotes, offering a portrait of mid-19th-century Italy through the eyes of one of its most celebrated patriots. Chapters such as Days on Horseback and Garibaldi At Home interweave travel narrative with biographical sketches, recounting meetings with brigands, scholars, sailors, and island communities Garibaldi encountered. The volume situates Garibaldi as traveler and statesman, preserving the memory of his pursuit of Italian unity alongside reflections on friendship, art, and liberty. The book, originally published in 1860, remains a curious artifact of political and literary travel writing.
