Recollections of a Housekeeper

Recollections Of A Housekeeper by Clarissa Packard offers a first-person memoir of a woman navigating marriage, motherhood, and the management of a bustling New England household in the early 19th century. The narrative begins with Clarissa Gray’s childhood and follows her marriage to Edward Packard, their life in Boston’s North Square, and the intimate dramas of domestic service: hiring, training, and sometimes losing cooks and helpers, managing servants, and raising children amidst social expectations. Through lively episodes with Sally, Cinda, Lucy, Polly, Lydia, and Growler the dog, the author explores virtues of thrift, diligence, and piety, while examining the tensions between independence and marital fidelity. Interwoven are reflections on gender roles, class, and the moral education of a wife and mother, alongside episodes of jealousy, temperance, and spiritual life. The work presents a vivid portrait of American domestic life in the period and a girl’s ascent from household girlhood to a wife-guided, morally centered household economy.
