Smaith, Elder & Co., London, 1908, first edition; 8vo, 145 x 215mm; pp vi, [iii], 382; red cloth, spine and front cover titled gilt, corners bumped, slight rubbing in places, ex-library, slightly discoloured on the front cover where a label has been removed and with a partial removal of relevant labels from the back pastedown, but otherwise firm and clean internally; handwritten note "F. E. Harrison from J. Crook" on the front pastedown; frontispiece of the author and 15 other plates including a facsimile of a paragraph from Napoleon to the author. . . . . . The work was intended initially as a family memoir but duly expanded and edited for publication. The author saw service initially in India, in China, during the Zulu war, and elsewhere in South Africa, finishing his career as Colonel-Commandant of the Royal Engineers at Aldershot. The shipping matrix is, and can only be, a very rough guide to postage costs being based, as it is, on a base weight of 1kg (2.2lbs), with the additional book bringing that weight up to a maximum of 2Kg and with the package as a whole fitting in to the "small parcel" criterion of height + width + depth not exceeding 90cm and with no single side longer than 60cm (which certainly covers ordinary books, of course).
In consequence, postage costs may be less or more than estimated in that matrix but will always be charged at whatever rate Royal Mail has come up with at the time. We'll also seek to minimise postal charges by packing two or more books together or by using carriers for larger consignments, as appropriate. As for compensation for loss or damage in transit, Royal Mail has quietly reduced the amounts that can be claimed to £20.00 in general but additional insurance can be had and we'll let you know how much that will be where necessary.
