The author is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and has transcribed records dating sometimes from as far back as the 13th century concerning the main roads, pre-reformation clergy, recusants, anti-Jacobites, rateable values, window taxes, prices of cereals, the lunatic asylum, pauper badges, cock fighting, the game laws, and police administration, among others. There also records relating to several of the townships. Eight illustrations.
