Recovery Capital: Pathways Through Prison (Recovery Pathways Series)

These lived experience authors demonstrate how hope can endure behind prison bars and recovery can begin where it is often least expected

This book asks the question – what helps or hinders people’s addiction recovery whilst in prison. Recovery Capital Pathways Through Prison brings together the voices of thirteen men and women who have lived through incarceration and addiction to the forefront, offering real lived insights of overcoming, hope and transformation. It highlights the critical resources needed to not just overcome addiction and maintain recovery but also navigate institutional and societal barriers and broken systems. The book highlights how recovery capital – personal, social, and community – can be harnessed to break cycles
of reoffending and addiction.

Published by New Central Media and part of the Recovery Capital Pathways series, this book challenges dominant narratives by centring lived experience as a form of knowledge, authority and power. This book is not a collection of stories; it presents real, lived out data, and evidence, of the harsh realities of addiction and recovery occurring in English prisons. New Central Media and this book is an act of epistemic justice. By positioning individuals with lived experience as knowledge producers, it disrupts traditional hierarchies of expertise and provides a radical alternative to mainstream discussions on criminal justice and recovery. A must read for those seeking freedom from addiction and support in maintaining recovery, as well as for practitioners, policymakers, and anyone committed to challenging stigma and driving social change.
