Recueil De Quelques Discours Prononc?s Dans La Cath?drale De Gand En 1810 Et En 1811

Recueil De Quelques Discours Prononcés Dans La Cathédrale De Gand En 1810 Et En 1811 by Martin Jean De Bast. This volume collects funeral orations delivered in Ghent Cathedral during 1810 and 1811 by M. J. De Bast, a canon of the cathedral and parish priest of St. Nicolas in Ghent. The discourses celebrate the lives and deaths of notable military and political figures of the Napoleonic era, including the Duke of Montebello and Napoleon Bonaparte, and are framed within a Catholic-national rhetoric that ties religious devotion to loyalty to the Empire. Rich with biblical citations and classical allusions, the sermons praise virtue, military prowess, duty, obedience to the sovereign, and the providential role of God in history. The text also features prayers and meditations on the Assumption and on Saint Napoleon’s cult, urging citizens to combine piety with patriotism and to honor the Emperor through public worship. The work offers a historically valuable snapshot of early 19th-century religious rhetoric surrounding empire, war, and state authority.
