About this Item
[iv], 142 pp., tall 4to, quarter black buckram, patterned paper sides, red morocco label with gilt title, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. Title page printed in red and black; the twenty-four red initials, title page illustration, headpieces and tailpiece by Valenti Angelo. Printed on Van Gelder paper by the Grabhorn Press. "This was the first of a series of three books that the [Grabhorn] Press contracted to do for Random House during the year of 1931. The House of Seven Gables, a companion volume to The Scarlet Letter, was to be the second; and the Life of Cellini in an edition of four hundred copies was to be the third. Because of business conditions, however, only The Red Badge of Courage - because it had progressed too far to be abandoned - was completed" (Heller and Magee 154). No. 853 of 980 copies. With the bookplate of James Strohn Copley (1916-1973), the journalist, newspaperman, and publisher of the San Diego Union-Tribune, on the front pastedown (his sale, Sotheby's, June 17, 2010, lot 235). Small label of the old-line San Francisco bookseller Newbegin's on rear pastedown. Good+ copy; contents fine, tips a little rubbed, small bump to lower tips, small bits of old residue from cello tape adhesive on endpapers, pale foxing to first three leaves (blanks), and one-inch crack at the rear gutter.
