Provides a history of the Red Cross and discusses the philosophy and work of the societies that are part of this international organization
Gr 5-8--Red Cross relates the history of the organization and explains the work that it does throughout the world; however, Michael Pollard's The Red Cross and the Red Crescent (New Discovery/Silver Burdett, 1994) provides a better treatment of the topic. United Nations explains who refugees are and outlines a brief history of modern international efforts to help them. There is a discussion of how refugees escape from their situations, what the camps are like, resettlement, and speculation about their future. Both of these series entries are concise and have attractive full-color and black-and-white photographs. Lists of organizations are appended. Average fare for reports.
