Paperback. What's in a name can be both revealing and catastrophic. I once shopped at a grocery store where the clerk was wearing a badge that read 'Floater'. I thought it was absurd for two reasons: 1. Store personnel felt it was acceptable for her to wear such a label, and 2. She wore the name plate without questioning such ridiculousness. The scenario got me to pondering about how often we blindly and unwittingly take on labels. As a child we yearn for parental validation, therefore we act well-behaved. What hope is there for the petulant child? As a parent, we must be nurturing and loving. Again, what allowances are there for mothers suffering postpartum depression? What about the absentee fathers who felt no inherent need to stay? As leaders, we project perfection and try to be the best at what we do. Is there no wiggle room for human error? Conversely, if no one tells you that you are strong then you might accept that you are weak. If no one says you are intelligent, then you might think by default you are dumb. If you and those around you don't think you are brave, then you accept that in the face of danger you genuinely lack courage.Have you ever said to yourself, "I was so glad to make it out of my 20s, because until I was 30, I made so many mistakes?" Well, imagine if all those missteps you had in life were made even earlier than when you were twenty-something. Not a pretty picture at all I'll bet. Treva meets us being suspended from high school. But she gets a second chance. At first blush, Treva, the main character, is floating through life. She hails from the seemingly desolate dry ground of Poindexter Village, one of America's first public housing projects. Before finishing high school, Treva has a head start on her life's downward spiral. Her naivete gently guides her down a path of destruction. Instead of greatness, she seems doomed for darkness. Trying to garner true love and acceptance are her main goals. The problem is she continues to opt for instant gratification. She's not thinking about her future because she can't see it. She's a teen living in and fixated on the here and now.The Oxford Dictionary defines redemption as "the action of regaining or gaining possession of something in exchange for payment or clearing a debt". The power of clemency is a vestige of the British Empire still exercised by presidents and governors in America. It is a penultimate ability to save an inmate from the death chamber or a life of imprisonment. Put simply, it is a government sanctioned "do over". Redemption From the Dark is a microscopic view of the fine details examined, or in some cases overlooked, to set free guilty parties.Treva should have been a Girl Scout steeped in the tradition to always being prepared. There's a saying that if you stay ready, then you don't have to get ready. However, Treva's perpetual problem is being placed at a critical step or phase of life, yet being woefully unprepared to deal with the responsibilities of adulthood. At several points in her story, you can envision her unconsciously, but happily wearing a badge that says 'Floater'. If only she could get a do over. If only she could see her own worth, her inner strength, and her feminine power. Can she ever wipe the slate clean with a fresh start to get it right this time? Will her boyfriend rescue her? Her mother? Her husband? Her father? Her brother or sister? Her aunt? Will she get her act together for her children? If they all fail her, will the Governor be her ultimate savior? Will a reprieve help or hurt her? Do the answers flow from Treva, whose name means wisdom? Does her fate lie within the purview of someone else? Does her destiny float between her and outside factors? Read along and find out. This item is printed on demand.
