[Np: np, c.1930s]. 12 panel fold-out brochure; printed on recto and verso. 3¼ x 3 inches folded; 37¾ x 3 inches unfolded. 21 half tone illustrations from photographs. Near fine From "Freshman" to "Sophomore" a prospectus for Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, cleverly designed to imitate a strip of movie film with each "cell" depicting a scene of life at an élite women s college. The "film s" plot presents the story of a typical incoming freshman, her anxieties allayed by a helpful de-coding of college and campus mysteries, routines, and activities. As the story unfolds, her experiences reveal much about the college, its personnel, and the school s educational and sports amenities. The illustration s caption texts, like a documentarian s film narrative, show a freshman meeting the Head of House, her residence cottage, and the school s memorial gates, library, botanic gardens, astronomical observatory, and chapel. There is even an academic procession and a sighting of college president, William Allen Neilson. Sports and activities include a thought of Junior year abroad, art and music, horseback riding, swimming, and skiing. That college staple, class outside? Of course! "And in no time at all…she has become a SOPHOMORE." Cleverly conceived and designed 1930s college prospectus for a women s college.
