In this fourth volume of a five-volume series (see LJ 4/15/91 and LJ 4/1/93 for Volumes 1 and 2), the publisher has done its usual solid job of reducing multidimensional events to a few comprehensive, readable lines. While coverage naturally focuses on World War II, some analysis is given to military thinking and excursions between wars. Land, air, and sea operations are broadly but evenly covered. The main sections consist of a chronological sequence of events, a biographical section covering major military and political figures, and a section outlining specific battles and events. There is also an interesting chapter on the war of logistics. As the title indicates, this is a reference work; it is not intended for in-depth researchers. For those needing short, lucid explanations of events, succinct biographies, and a broad overview, it is excellent. This volume, and indeed the entire series, is recommended for high school, public, and undergraduate libraries.
