Reflections on the Relation of Recent Scientific Inquiries to the Received Teaching of Scripture. an Address, Etc

Reflections On The Relation Of Recent Scientific Inquiries To The Received Teaching Of Scripture is an address by James Moncreiff, delivered in 1867 to the Edinburgh Young Men's Christian Association. This thought-provoking work advocates for a careful and respectful dialogue between science and scripture. Moncreiff critiques the tendency to dismiss biblical faith based on scientific claims, urging that arguments should be evaluated by standard evidence and reasoning rather than solely by scientific authority. He recognizes the contributions of Charles Lyell and Charles Darwin, yet argues that their theories do not conclusively disprove the Mosaic narrative or the unique moral and spiritual status of humanity. The address differentiates between the record of nature and the inspired Genesis account, proposing that geology offers relative time measures and that a literal interpretation of creation can coexist with evidence of species unity while upholding the doctrine of divine agency. Moncreiff also addresses the antiquity of man, asserting that biblical chronology remains plausible and that a properly interpreted revelation is compatible with scientific inquiry.
