La Rochefoucauld's best-known writingsm with marginal annotations by Monroe Wheeler (1899-1988) and his penciled monogram on the inside front blank. La Rochefoucauld, the seventeenth-century aristocrat who was also one of the most brilliant members of the French classical school, profoundly influenced Lord Chesterfield, Thomas hardy, Voltaire, Stendhal and Nietzsche. He is best known for his Maximes, a collection of brief, striking truths and merciless observations of human nature, From the Library of Monroe Wheeler, former Director of Exhibitions and Publications at the Museum of modern Art and one of the most influential figures of the modern art world. Many of the maximes have been translated by Wheeler's penciled hand. Scattered foxing throughout. Edges a little rubbed. Spine missing.
