The refutation of Brenton's critique and a summary of exchanged letters and comments bound into a single volume. Following Howe's victory at the Battle of Ushant Montagu came across a convoy of French ships which appeared to be stronger than they actually were and so did not fully engage. Captain Brenton criticised Montagu's 'failure' and further that the Admiralty was displeased at Montagu's actions in his 'History of the Royal Navy'. Montagu considered himself to have been dishonoured and this book and statement are Montagu's successful clearance of his name. viii, 53, I, xxiii, I pp. Later three-quarter calf over marbled paper boards.
