Synopsis

What are the prospects for Asian regional economic integration? This is the question at the heart of a two day seminar and conference organized by the OECD Development Centre and the Asian Development Bank. This book contains the major contributions to the seminar, as well as remarks made to the conference made by eminent personalities from Asia, Europe, and the Americas. The conclusions are tentative but reflect a belief that formal regional agreements are likely to be rare, although regional concertation, already manifesting itself in the so-called "growth triangles," for example, is probable. The benefits of coordination, however, will not be for Asian economies alone, but will also accrue to the region's partners throughout the globe who will themselves be encouraged to participate in supporting some types of coordination.
