Brothers James and Horace Smith created this volume in response to an unsuccessful calling for new addresses to be recited at the reopening of Drury Lane Theatre, which was rebuilt in 1812 after a fire. Collecting a series of unsuccessful addresses in the manner of works by famous poets of the time, in parody of their styles. Featuring popular figures such as Thomas Moore, Sir Walter Scott, William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and many others.This is considered a classic in the literature of parody, going through seven editions within the first three months.Illustrated with a frontispiece and vignette illustrations. Rebound in full straight up grain morocco binding, with gilt to spine and boards, gilt to edges, renewed marbled endpapers. Externally generally smart, with rubbing to joints, minor shelf wear only.
