About this Item
On the Relations of Diseases of the Skin to Internal Disorders is a 1906 dermatological treatise by Dr. L. Duncan Bulkley, physician to the New York Skin and Cancer Hospital, published simultaneously in New York and London by Rebman. Structured as a series of lectures, the book advances the argument - notably progressive for its time - that skin disease should not be treated as a purely localized or dermatological problem, but rather understood in relation to broader internal, systemic causes, including faulty metabolism, auto-intoxication, and nervous/digestive disturbance. The table of contents reflects this approach directly, with sections addressing eruptions associated with gout (eczema, acne, psoriasis), rheumatism (purpura, psoriasis), diabetes (pruritus, xanthoma), obesity (intertrigo, eczema), and scrofulosis (lupus, impetiginous eczema), alongside broader discussions of diet, hygiene, drug eruptions, and general therapeutics. Bulkley's holistic, whole-body approach to dermatology - treating skin conditions as expressions of underlying constitutional and metabolic disorders rather than isolated local pathology - represents a genuinely interesting historical position within the field, anticipating later integrative approaches to dermatological medicine even as much contemporary dermatology of the period was moving toward more localized, microbiological explanations of skin disease. Condition & Binding: This is a hardcover volume bound in sage-green cloth, with a maroon leather (or leather-effect) spine label lettered in gilt "SKIN DISEASES AND INTERNAL DISORDERS / BULKLEY," and a gilt caduceus (medical staff) emblem stamped below on the spine along with old shelf numbers ("11.7 / 387"). The cloth boards show light overall wear with scattered small marks and light rubbing to the corners and spine ends, with some wear/scuffing visible at the head of the spine. The text block is tight and complete, with light overall toning to the pages and no evident foxing, staining, or missing text. Overall- very good.
