Alexander Dallas Bache (1806-1867), great-grandson of Benjamin Franklin, taught engineering at West Point; served in the United States Army Corps of Engineers; taught natural philosophy and chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania; and was superintendent of the United States Coast Survey. Edward H. Courtenay (1803-1853) was a professor of mathematics at the University of Pennsylvania; a civil engineer involved in the construction of Ft.
