Relics of Genius

Relics Of Genius by T P. Grinsted chronicles pilgrimages to graves and tombs of poets, painters, and actors, focusing on London’s Westminster Abbey, St. Paul’s Cathedral, and other sacred places. It begins with Westminster’s Poets’ Corner and proceeds through corridors of memory to Chaucer, Spenser, Beaumont, Drayton, Jonson, Cowley, Dryden, Denham, Roscommon, Rowe, Addison, Prior, Gay, and Garrick, Sheridan, Campbell, Reynolds, and other luminaries. The author sketches the edifices surrounding their resting places: the Abbey’s chapels, St. Mary Overie, the Temple, St. Clement Danes, and other churches; it extends to dramatic figures in Covent Garden and the parks. It mingles biographical vignettes with anecdotes about patrons, friends, and the social world that supported these artists. The Preface frames the project as a humane celebration of genius, not mere gloom, aiming to illuminate the lives behind great works and to link memory with living scenes of English history and culture.
