The Religious Condition of Christendom, Exhibited in a Series of Papers, Ed. by E. Steane

The Religious Condition Of Christendom, Exhibited In A Series Of Papers, Ed. By E. Steane — Edward Steane. This volume gathers selections from the British Evangelical Alliance’s Fifth Annual Conference (London, 1851), edited and prefaced by Edward Steane, to survey the state of Protestant Christendom, counter infidelity and Romanism, and promote evangelical unity. It presents analyses and reflections on Ireland (Part II), including Protestant demographics, theological education, voluntary societies, denominational activity, and missionary efforts among Roman Catholics; and France (Part III, beginning), addressing infidelity, the state of Romanism, internal doctrinal tensions, and calls for lay-led evangelism and broader Protestant cooperation. The work also includes extensive local summaries and background material: the preface and introductory papers, a historical sketch of the Evangelical Alliance, and discussions of Great Britain’s encounter with infidelity, continental evangelical movements, and transatlantic evangelical life. Central themes include the tension between unity and division, the pursuit of a doctrinal basis for fellowship, and a robust, transnational evangelical mission shaped by education, publishing, and social reform.
