Two books bound in one volume, second title below. Red blind stamped cloth, gilt-decorated spine with gilt emblem of the Lord's Supper on front; good joints, some edge-wear, 7 x 5 1/4 inches. Several names on the front end papers. Lovely hand-colored wood engravings as frontis and extra title page for the first book. 159 pages in Emblems, with many wood engravings; 159 pages in Allegories, with wood engravings. Both books have some foxing, a faint top margin tidemark on many pages, and one of the back free end papers is torn at the bottom, lacking about 1 x 3 inches. Bound with Religious Allegories : being a series of Emblematic Engravings, with Written Explanations, Miscellaneous Observations and Religious Reflections, designed to illustrate Divine Truth, in accordance with the cardinal doctrines of Christianity. Boston: Crown and Emery. 1854. Improved Edition.Bible truth taught by pictures and allegories. Here is a sample on "Carnal Security," presented with the engraving of a man lounging in a bed of roses, at the edge of a cliff. "Sin possesses a peculiar faculty to deceive; this is true of sin in all its modifications. It allures, that it may betray and destroy. It meets the youth with smiles only, that it may plunge a dagger more surely in the heart. It promises to the gambler, th erobber, and the murderer, wealth, pleasure, kingdoms.
