Religious Qualifications for Civil Employments Candidly Consider'd: in the Occasional Courants, from No Vii. to Xvii

Religious Qualifications For Civil Employments Candidly Consider'D: In The Occasional Courants, From No VII. To Xviipresents a late-17th/early-18th century English political-religious tract that argues against coercive religious conformity and advocates for freedom of conscience. The text explores the concept of Occasional Conformity—the practice of publicly aligning with the established church to avoid penalties while privately holding dissenting views—and critiques the fervor of High-Church proponents who oppose it. Through a series of arguments and dialogues, the author defends the right of Protestants and dissenters to engage in public office without being subjected to compulsory religious tests. The work examines the delicate balance between church unity and individual conscience, condemns hypocrisy, and reviews historical and legal arguments regarding religious qualifications for office, civil penalties, and the state's role in religion. Ultimately, it champions liberty of conscience and moderation in public religion, cautioning against the political manipulation of faith.
