On Religious Revivals, an Address

On Religious Revivals, An Address by Benjamin Philpot presents a careful examination of what constitutes a genuine religious revival and how to distinguish it from spurious experiences. Delivered at a meeting of clergy on January 8, 1851, the address surveys Scripture and church history to define revival as a renewal of spiritual life wrought by the Holy Spirit, not by human excitement. Philpot traces examples from Old Testament revivals—Judges, Samuel, Asa, Ezra, Nehemiah—and the Pentecostal outpouring of Acts, highlighting common features: contrition for sin, renewed love and faith, urgent prayer, vigilant self-distrust, and a renewed zeal for holiness and missionary work. He contrasts genuine revival with counterfeit movements that appeal to emotion or manipulate the heart without true repentance or obedience. Throughout, he emphasizes the Word of God as the sole rule of faith, cautions against anti-scriptural innovations, and stresses the need for humble, Scripturally grounded ministry within the Church of England. The concluding vision invites a united, prayerful pursuit of renewal that strengthens preaching, prayer, fellowship, and doctrinal fidelity.
