Ethan Allen Hitchcock's important first book, an alchemy treatise based on his extensive private library of the subject. Hitchcock wrote of the religious philosophy and symbolism in the practice and writing of the alchemists. The book was originally published in 1857 by Crosby, Nichols, and Company. OCLC cites just 6 holdings for this edition published by James Miller. 8vo, 304, [1]pp. Publisher's green cloth stamped and ruled in blind, gilt spine lettering. Boards rubbed, corners and spine ends worn, chip to upper corner of rear endpaper. Contemporary Santa Cruz Free Library label to front pastedown, stamped discard. A very good copy.
