Remarks On. 'Observations On The Chemical Part Of The Evidence. Of The Action Brought By Messrs. Severn, King & CO. Against The Imperial Insurance Company', By Samuel Parkes', By R. Phillips And Others — Samuel Parkes presents a polemical response to the observations published in the Journal of Literature, Science & the Arts concerning the chemical aspects of the evidence in a fire-insurance case. The work includes a defense of Parkes’s own experiments with whale oil, and a detailed critique of the opposing witnesses and their methodology. It comprises extended remarks and appendices (by Phillips and other experts such as Taylor, Martineau, Bostock, Children, Daniell, Garden, and others) that challenge Parkes’s interpretations, question the accuracy of reported experiments, and discuss safety considerations in sugar-boiling processes. The publication, issued in London in 1821, continues a scientific debate about the chemical theory of combustion, vapor formation, and the reliability of testimony in technical trials.
