Remarks on the Refutation of Calvinism: by George Tomline

Remarks On The Refutation Of Calvinism: By George Tomline. Thomas Scott's critical companion work surveys and critiques George Tomline's Refutation of Calvinism, focusing on major doctrinal points such as original sin, free will, regeneration, justification, faith, and good works. The text presents extensive remarks on the Preface and multiple chapters, contending for a Protestant orthodoxy that emphasizes the necessity of grace, the compatibility of faith with works, and the living nature of saving faith. Scott argues against the idea that regeneration or salvation can be reduced to mere external rites, insisting that justification is by grace through faith, with good works serving as evidence of a living faith rather than contributing to merit. The publication includes a detailed engagement with patristic and liturgical authorities, quotations from reformers and homilies, and a sustained defense of the active role of human agency under divine aid. It constitutes a substantial polemical contribution to 19th-century debates on soteriology, church authority, and the interpretation of Calvinist and anti-Calvinist positions within Anglican discourse.
