No Date given - c. 1910/20 ? . "Third Edition with Added Stories. The Illustrations are from Life." - Stated on the Title Page. Green covers with pasted on illustration of negro girl to front cover (a little marked) , bright gilt titling to spine, a little faded to the bottom of the rear cover, head/tail of spine lightly bumped, but covers generally clean and tight. The page fore-edges are slightly 'dusty'/browned/foxed. Patterned endpapers. (10) + 102 pp. Tissue guarded b/w frontispiece. 5 tissue guarded colour illustrations and many b/w illustrations and photos of of many negro servants/slaves, etc, presumably taken sometime between 1880's & perhaps 1910? . Some browning/foxing in the book = type of paper. The illustrations are on 'art' paper and are generally bright and clean. There is a Prize Presentation note (non-authorial) written in faded ink on the reverse of half title to the former owner who won the book in a competition, and dated 1924. The author, identified by initials, is listed in the British Library as 'Mary Elizabeth Walsh of South Carolina'. Most are stories about Charleston, slaves/servants and domestic/social life in the Deep South - but other tales include stories of a trip to Ireland, etc. These are true reminiscences by a member of the English 'higher class', who went to the States (from Clevedon Court, UK) for health reasons and stayed with "the few remaining gentle folk. .
