Synopsis
This story shows children how to improve their perspectives after scary or disappointing events. It explores several ways for children to reduce their negative attitudes. It is intended for ages 6 to 12. It helps children help themselves in easy and practical ways. The book includes room for readers and/or listeners' personal responses. It is based on actual events beginning when my grandchildren were 3 and 5 years of age. My son created a word game he played with them to assist in framing their viewpoints about life's experiences. They use these tools to this day.
About the Authors
Ruth Fowler, a licensed professional counselor, specializes in achieving short term results using Rational-Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) combined with other modalities. She worked for twenty five years as an educator teaching English, creative writing, and career-based classes to gifted and talented, honors, academic, and at risk students. In private practice as a career counselor and psychotherapist since 1995, she also presents workshops and seminars to corporate, government, education, and community groups. She earned her M.C.C. designation after serving as a career counselor for five years. However, the majority of her practice is serving individuals and families for personal issues. Ms. Fowler's degrees include an M.Ed. in Counseling, University of Houston; an M.A., California State University at Northridge; and a B.A., San Diego State University. From the Albert Ellis Institute of New York, she has received extensive REBT Training as well as Recovery Training in a scientific approach called SMART(TM) Recovery. She has facilitated a SMART(TM) group each Tuesday evening for 24 years, empowering its participants by providing tools for their personal journey. It is hoped that the need for recovery from upsetting childhood experiences will be prevented through some of the tools presented in this chapter book. The story explains and illustrates a few ways children can heal their own wounds as they come up. Always active, Ms. Fowler enjoys traveling, yoga, photography, creative writing, bridge, film and anything else that's fun or interesting. A resident of Houston, Texas, Ms. Fowler's greatest treasures are her daughter and son, their spouses, and five grandchildren. The characters in the story are named after her grandchildren. Ms. Telage grew up in Colorado instructed in art from an early age by her mother and both grandmothers. Traveling through Europe further inspired her creativity. Beginning with formal art in college, she continues as both student and instructor to this day. She teaches group and private classes in impressionistic watercolor and acrylic painting techniques. She served as the Gallery Director and as President for the Watercolor Art Society - Houston and is a member of the World Artists Directory and Katy Area Artists. Her art has received numerous awards. Art is Ms. Telage's passion and her joy. She feels art is enduring, transporting us immediately to another dimension. She paints all manner of subject matter with a focus to the core of its essence...the form, color, texture, and spirit are translated through her brush. She takes pride in creating fine art and is delight to share her visions with others.
