Energy production and utilization are directly associated with climate change. Harnessing energy from renewables can provide a viable path towards achieving sustainability and reducing carbon footprints, which can help mitigate the harmful effects of climate change. India is endowed with substantial hydropower potential. Under this light, Renewable Energy from Small & Micro Hydro Projects: practical aspects & case studies introduces the process of developing hydropower projects, especially in Indian context. The role of hydroelectric power, as part of water management, in combating climate change also forms the subject matter of this book.
Selection of suitable sites, hydro turbines, electrical systems, transportation, and salient features of dam and reservoir operation are discussed. Cost estimation, feasibility studies, promotional policies of the government, and other organizations involved in hydropower also form the subject matter of the title. The publication also covers the basics of fluid mechanics along with an overview of the hydropower development in India and the world. The book is supplemented with statistical data relevant to development and operation of hydropower projects which makes the text an authentic read. It will be a useful guide and reference to students, designers, planners, consultants, and field engineers engaged in hydro energy sector.

Shiv Vishal Pandey
Shiv Vishal Pandey is a B.E.: Mechanical (with honours) from Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology, Allahabad. He has served as General Manager in Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Bhopal. His tenure at BHEL spans for more than three decades with specialization in hydraulic development of turbines, model testing, detailed design of turbines, governor controls and protection, system engineering and balance of plant equipment for hydropower plants. He has travelled worldwide because of engagements with assignments related to hydro energy.
Shiv Vishal Pandey has received his training on development and design of reversible pump-turbines for Nagarjun Sagar PSS at Hitachi Limited, Japan. He has pioneered in successful development of large-capacity hydro turbines and pumps. He is well known for developing and reviewing most of the Indian standards on selection, layout, and electro-mechanical equipment for hydropower plants. He is also involved in developing the guidelines on residual life assessment of turbines and associated equipment with CBIP, New Delhi. At BHEL, Bhopal, he was instrumental in establishing high-velocity oxygen flame facility for hard coating and new hydro block equipped with 5-axis CNC machines and high-head test bed for model testing.
He has over 20 technical papers to his credit. He has also provided guidance to many students of M.Tech. At present, he is engaged with a number of IPP/consultancy firms/turbine manufacturers for providing quality consultancy services.
