Synopsis
Report Of The Committee Appointed By Order Of The Board, Dated 30th June, 1832: To Inquire Into The Circumstances Connected With Mr Bayley's Publication Of The Calendars Of The Proceedings In Chancery, And His Charges For The Same. The report, issued by the UK Record Commission, documents a formal inquiry into the publication of calendars of Chancery proceedings and the editor's charges. It comprises a detailed narrative of the committee's nine sections (Discovery of the Original MS, Translation, Transcriptions, Comparison, Removal, Mutilation, Charges for transcription, Charges for fair copying, and Formation of the indexes), with appended examinations and depositions (Appendix) and letters (Appendix B–Z). The text records testimony from Mr. Bayley and Tower staff (Luxmore, Williams, Hardy, Roberts, Thompson, etc.), discussions of whether original bundles were consulted, the process of transcription and translation, and disputes over the accuracy and integrity of the published calendars. It culminates in findings about the replication of Lysons’ earlier work, discrepancies in folio counts, and the financial aspects of the editors’ work. Published in 1833.
