The Free International University was founded by Joseph Beuys, Heinrich Böll, Caroline Tisdall, and Robert McDowell, among others, in Beuys Düsseldorf studio on April 27, 1973. While Beuys and Böll wrote the manifesto, Tisdall (an art critic) and McDowell to wrote this work on the feasibility of the University. The vision of the FIU was one where students and faculty lived communally, and students did not achieve degrees, but rather focused on interdisciplinary research and the fostering of creative potential. Tisdall s feasibility study expounds on the manifesto s principles and makes an argument for founding the FIU in Dublin. The choice of Ireland was multi-faceted and primarily political, highlighting "Ireland s resistance to standardisation … [as] an important example for Europe" and its "timely awareness of the danger … of total capitulation to the multinational firms, in spite of short-term fiancial [sic] and employment benefits."
